The Journal
THINK.
Product decisions, engineering notes and arguments we have had internally and decided were worth writing down.
Published when a decision has survived production, not when a content calendar says a slot is due.
Thinking out loud.
Product decisions, engineering notes and arguments we have had internally and decided were worth writing down. The Journal is where the reasoning lives; the Manifesto is what we already believe.
Why we write at all
Every architectural choice carries its rationale, so the same argument is never had twice. That practice started internally, as a decision log nobody outside the company would ever read, and most of what appears here begins life as one of those entries.
Which means the Journal is not marketing with a byline. It is the reasoning behind a choice we actually made, published only once the choice has survived contact with production.
The consequence is that it publishes slowly. An article ships when a decision has been tested, not when a content calendar says a slot is due. One excellent piece is worth more than five that nearly say something.
If you want the finished position rather than the working, the Manifesto is shorter and more certain.
What it covers
Five threads, each tied to work actually in production.
What gets published
An entry has to clear all four of these, or it stays in the decision log.
- 01It shippedWe write about decisions that survived production, not ideas we find appealing in principle.
- 02It names the tradeoffEvery choice cost something. An entry that cannot say what it gave up is an advertisement.
- 03It could be wrongIf new evidence would not change the position, it is not a finding. It is a slogan.
- 04It is useful without usA reader should be able to act on it without hiring Oriverse. Otherwise it is a brochure.
Transmission Status
First entry incoming.
Nothing is published yet, and we would rather say that than pad the page. The first entry is the one we have the most evidence for: what it took to get voice latency under 1.5 seconds end to end, and which of the obvious answers turned out to be wrong.
In the meantime
The products are the argument. Everything the Journal will eventually explain is already running somewhere.
